Has Google’s AI search Made Us Smarter or Just Lazier?

A few days ago, I searched for something on Google and I remembered that before I could click on a single website, Google had already given me an answer.

Not a link or a list of articles. It was an actual answer. I read the summary, nodded to myself and moved on with my day.

Later that evening, it hit me. There was a time when a simple Google search could send me down a rabbit hole. I’d open several tabs, skim through different articles, compare opinions, and sometimes end up learning things I wasn’t even looking for. Half the fun was in the discovery. One question often led to ten more.

Now, things feel different. Google’s AI summaries are undeniably convenient. No need to compare viewpoints and explore. It saves time and provide quick answers. For busy people, that’s a gift. But I sometimes wonder what happens when information becomes too easy to access. Are we becoming more informed, or are we slowly losing our curiosity?

The funny thing is that I don’t completely dislike AI summaries. In fact, I’ve found them useful when I’m trying to understand a topic quickly. As someone who genuinely enjoys digging deeper, that process has always been part of the fun. Sometimes they even point me toward angles I hadn’t considered before. The summary becomes a clue, a starting point, a map for further exploration. The problem begins when the summary becomes the destination rather than the beginning of the journey.

Perhaps the issue isn’t Google or AI at all. The real question is whether convenience has changed the way we think. Are we still willing to dig deeper when the answer appears instantly on our screens? Or have we become comfortable accepting the first explanation we see?

I’m curious. When was the last time you opened multiple tabs to research something instead of relying on the AI summary at the top of the page?

      I agree!😁

Dictionaries and encyclopedias have definitely been replaced. Convenience won, but I still think there was something special about having to search for answers ourselves.
