Summer

It’s summer and the beginning of the holidays for me. For months, I’ve been looking forward to this break, dreaming of days with no alarm clock, no rushing around and no schedule telling me where I need to be. My plans were simple enough: sleep, eat, read books, take evening strolls, watch movies, and enjoy doing absolutely nothing important for a while. The funny thing is that every year I look forward to summer holidays and every year when they finally arrive, I begin to have second thoughts. Not because I don’t want the break, but because summer comes with conditions and the heat is at the top of the list. The sun steps outside with confidence every single day and suddenly the thought of traveling, sightseeing, or even spending long hours outdoors doesn’t seem as exciting as it did a few months ago.

Then there are the mosquitoes. I genuinely want to know why they seem so happy during summer. While the rest of us are trying to stay cool and survive the weather, they are thriving. Add the random bugs that appear out of nowhere and turn a peaceful evening into a battle for personal space, and summer starts to feel like a season that requires more preparation than enjoyment. Sometimes I wonder why some people genuinely love it. I see people making travel plans, attending festivals, spending entire days outdoors, and talking about how much they enjoy the sunshine. Maybe they know something I don’t. Maybe they are built differently. Maybe they are aliens. At this point, I’m willing to consider all possibilities 😂.

The truth is that my holiday plans are not nearly as ambitious as they used to be. These days, the idea of sleeping well, finishing a few books, taking a quiet evening walk when the temperature finally becomes reasonable, and watching movies without feeling guilty sounds like a perfect holiday. I don’t know when rest became so attractive but somewhere along the way, holidays stopped being about doing more and became about recovering from everything I’ve already done. Years back, I might have measured a successful holiday by how many places I visited or how many activities I squeezed into it. These days, feeling rested at the end of it sounds like a bigger achievement.

So while I may complain about the heat, the mosquitoes, and the bugs that seem determined to make themselves known every summer, I still look forward to this season. Not for the weather and certainly not for the insects, but for the permission it gives me to slow down. My plans may change before the holidays are over, and I may end up doing more than I expect, but for now… sleep, food, books, evening strolls, and movies are enough. Honestly, after the year so far, I think rest sounds like the best plan of all.
