If you had to give up one word that you use regularly, what would it be?
“There’s one little phrase I say so often, I barely notice it… and maybe it’s time I finally stop.”
It sneaks into almost every sentence I say: “It was so hectic yesterday, you know…?” or “I just can’t explain it, you know…?”And here’s the amusing part, sometimes I don’t even realize I’m saying it. It’s like a verbal comfort blanket, a filler word that makes the conversation feel safer or friendlier.
But what if I stopped saying it? What if I spoke fully, with intention, without relying on that tiny phrase to carry my meaning? Perhaps I’d become aware of how often I let words pass by without truly considering them. Instead of waiting for my turn to drop a “you know…”
Giving up “you know…” sounds small, almost silly. But it makes me think about all the other little words we lean on without meaning. Words that fill space instead of adding value. Words that hide hesitation, insecurity, or uncertainty.
So yes, if I had to give up one word, “you know…” would go.
Imagine letting it go… and replaced it with something else? Maybe “wow”, maybe “actually”, maybe just a long pause. You never know… ahahaha.
With stories always,
Yhem💞
