Do you remember life before the internet?
Yes, I do and honestly, it feels like a different lifetime.
I didn’t own a phone until after high school. And to be fair, I didn’t really need one. Back then, it wasn’t strange for a child to live without a personal device. My parents each had one of those classic Nokia phones. The kind with the torchlight and snake game. And at the time, they were considered luxury items!
Before the internet became a daily necessity, my childhood was filled with simple joys. In elementary school, junior high, and even throughout high school, life revolved around cartoons, outdoor adventures, indoor games, and a steady diet of storybooks and novels. I can still remember the excitement of rushing home to catch my favorite cartoon, or gathering with neighborhood kids to play hide and seek until the streetlights came on.
My favorites were;
Cartoons -Flintstones
Outdoor game -Tag
Indoor game – Mario
Story book- Animal farm
Novels – Books by Nora Roberts and Sydney Sheldon.
That was the era where imagination ruled. We created entire worlds from nothing; turning our front yards into kingdoms and living rooms into dance halls. I truly believe that’s where my love for creative storytelling began. With no Google to answer every question and no social media to scroll endlessly, our minds wandered freely. We dreamed we played, and we lived offline.
Sometimes I wonder; would kids today even survive a weekend without Wi-Fi?
While the internet has brought us closer and made life easier in many ways, there’s something irreplaceable about that slower, quieter life. The one where face-to-face conversations mattered more, and your creativity was your best companion.
